More than 20,000 people attended an Australia Day protest rally which began at the Block in Redfern then marched to the Yabun Festival in Victoria Park, Sydney. Aboriginal leaders called for the Australian government to change the date when Australia Day is celebrated because it is a day of mourning for Indigenous people that celebrates the invasion of Australia by British colonisers.

Aboriginal dancers performed along the route of the march. Many banners called for an end to deaths in custody such as Dhungatti Warrior David Dungay Hill and the inhumane way that prison guards shackled Indigenous prisoner Eric Whittaker while he lay dying in hospital.
